I recently re-read the hilarious books by Daniel O'Malley, The Rook and Stiletto. I was so inspired by the world he has created, that I made this fan-fiction graphic novel page about two supernatural super-secret agents.
This piece was my final assignment for the Make Art That Sells Portfolio Bootcamp- a class that spanned four months and challenged me to create more than four finished pieces for my portfolio in four different areas of illustration. This last assignment was for a graphic novel page, which really excites me because I would absolutely love to write and illustrate my own graphic novel.
To begin, we were given a set of photo prompts to play with. Right away I was taken with the two Victorian portraits. I love the look on her face that seems to say, “Did you just tell me I’d be prettier if I smiled?” And obviously, that guy’s beard is noteworthy. I started by drawing them close to the original, but almost as soon as I did I realized that they needed super powers.
From here it was easy to see how my graphic novel page would play out. Clearly these two are a married couple, and also supernatural secret agents in Dan O’Malley’s Checquy agency. The other prompts started to fall into place: What if the butterflies flew off of their stamps? Clearly that ship is being attacked by a kraken. Those laser eyes were perfect for a joke I make literally any time laser eye surgery is brought up - “How soon do the laser eyes work once they’ve been put in?” (I’ve been making dad jokes since well before I was even a mom.)
Honestly, the one that stumped me the most was the hat. I love the matchbooks, and I really thought some brilliant idea would come to me about how to use them, but I ended up running out of time and went with a fairly boilerplate option. I had an idea to incorporate a worm’s hole that was an actual wormhole through space and time, and the world’s only confirmed time-traveling worm… but I guess that’s for another time.
Have you read The Rook? Are you aware it’s being made into a tv series for Starz?? Are you as excited about that as I am?? Do you have a clever idea for the Adam Hat? Drop me a line! I love hearing from you.
